USPA World Snow Polo Championships
12/18/2011 - Aspen, USA
Despite their best efforts in a fun filled, snowy encounter, St. Regis Connoisseur Nacho Figueras and his patron Bash Kazi's KIG snow polo team could not secure a win at the 12th Annual Snow Polo Championships in Aspen, Colorado. KIG was beaten along with the other four teams by the Audi Polo team, who won the event for the third year running. Team Captain Melissa Ganzi, backed by high goal pro players Juan Bollini and Jeff Hall, triumphed over Team Ciroc 9-6 in an intense final, receiving Baccarrat trophies to commemorate their win on Aspen’s Marolt Open Space, December 17th to 18th, 2011.
Nacho was joined by other high goal polo players including Nic Roldan, Tommy Biddle, Alan Martinez and Matthew Fonseca, who all played in the 16 goal championships under bright blue skies, sunshine and just enough snow!
First introduced in 1985, at the resort town of St. Moritz in Switzerland, where Nacho will be playing January 23rd 2012, this year's Aspen Snow Polo was watched by several hundred spectators. The play takes place in a small enclosure, fenced to keep the large red ball in play. The polo ponies, generously provided by The Roaring Fork Polo Club, wear special horse shoes to give them traction in the snow. The ponies love the game and dazzle spectators with fast turns and lots of acceleration to chase down the bouncing balls.
With the event’s reputation for being as much fun off the field as on, the weekend’s scheduled social activities included a VIP Cocktail party for guests and SPG Platinum members at the newly renovated St. Regis Aspen Resort hosted by General Manager, Senih Geray, and honoring St. Regis Connoisseur Nacho Figueras, a dinner at the Caribou Club and a dance party at The St. Regis Aspen Resort hosted by Aspen Peak Magazine.

Commenting on The St. Regis Buenos Aires’ sponsorship of this year's match José R Santamarina, Polo President Hurligham said “for us it is very important to have premium sponsors in our Polo Open, which is the oldest in the world, and St. Regis is one of them. We are very pleased to have them as sponsor for some years now, we know The St. Regis Buenos Aires has not opened yet and for that we are more than thankful for the support they provide”.

Some of the world's top women players were very much "in the pink" with a fantastic display of prowess, bravery and skill on the polo field with a closely fought match ending in a 6 -5 win to Orange Fizz team with their winning goal being scored as the bell rang. Team Orange Fizz was victorious at the Shanghai Tang Women’s International Polo Tournament 2011, defeating Team Absolut by the score of 6 – 5 in the 4-chukka final. The St. Regis 1904 Polo Cup
9/17/2011 - Greenwich Polo Club, Greenwich, CT
On Saturday 17th September at Greenwich Polo Club, Greenwich, CT, USA, star polo player and St. Regis Connoisseur, Nacho Figueras, captained the winning St. Regis team 12 goals to Airstream's 8, in the first ever St. Regis 1904 Polo Club named for the year of the birth of the St. Regis Hotel in New York. Nacho was joined on the team by Peter M. Brant, co-founder of the Greenwich Polo Club, patron of the White Birch polo team and founder of The Brant Art and Study Foundation.
The highly anticipated match celebrated the 135th anniversary of American polo and St. Regis’ commitment to the sport for almost just as long. The St. Regis 1904 Polo Cup offered a modern perspective of the international ‘Sport of Kings’ by incorporating passions of the brand’s discerning guests: contemporary art and nouveau jazz. The polo match was proudly supported by Coca-Cola who, celebrating their 125th anniversary this year, provided complimentary Coca-Cola beverages to spectators, and in partnership with American Express®, the official card of St. Regis polo.
In addition to Peter Brant and Nacho Figueras, guests in attendance included St. Regis Global Brand Leader Paul James, Starwood Hotels and Resorts President and Chief Executive Officer Frits van Paasschen, St. Regis Connoisseur Jason Wu, Delfina Blaquier, Valentino Garavani, Giancarlo Giammetti, Michael Michelle, Olivia Chantecaille & Ren Grady, Cameron Silver, Michelle Harper, Jessica Hart, Vladimir Restoin- Roitfeld and Stavros Niarchos. VIP guests enjoyed the signature St. Regis Afternoon Tea and butler service while the local community picnicked match side to enjoy the afternoon's sport.
The St. Regis brand has long been associated with the world of polo, beginning at the turn of the last century when polo matches on Manhattan’s Governors Island were the highlight of the New York summer social calendar and where St. Regis’ founding family, the Astors, were a prominent fixture. On the heels of this year’s St. Regis Queens Cup in Bangkok and the fourth annual St. Regis International Cup in the United Kingdom, St. Regis brought a taste of the brand’s signature style to polo enthusiasts at the inaugural St. Regis 1904 Polo Cup in the United States.
Commenting on the inaugural St. Regis 1904 Cup Nacho said “It was an honor to play at one of the most prestigious clubs in America, together with Peter Brant and St. Regis, who have done so much for the sport we love over the years. It was especially exciting for me to be back at Greenwich Polo Club because it was the first club I played with in the United States.”
Nacho's return to play polo at Greenwich Polo Club marks the 30th anniversary of the Club, and co-founder Peter M. Brant said “I was delighted to play with Nacho and his St. Regis polo team at Greenwich Polo Club, "Many years ago, at the start of what has become a fantastic career and journey, Nacho played for me on the White Birch team. As he continues to play polo around the world with St. Regis, he draws in so many spectators: some lifelong aficionados and some first-time enthusiasts. His passion for polo makes him a fine ambassador for the sport.”
St. Regis guests began the day with a private tour of artist Josh Smith’s exhibition, “Josh Smith: The American Dream” at The Brant Foundation Art Study Center. They were then invited to watch the day’s match from St. Regis’ VIP hospitality marquee and experienced bespoke signature St. Regis Butler Service as well as the brand’s signature rituals including legendary St. Regis Bloody Mary cocktails, first concocted at the brand’s flagship over 75 years ago, and St. Regis Afternoon Tea crafted by Sandro Micheli, executive pastry chef for Adour at The St. Regis New York. During the exclusive luncheon, Jazz at Lincoln Center presented a special performance led by Jonathan Batiste, who has ignited the music scene in New York City as the music curator at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and, at the age of 24, is the youngest ever Steinway Performing Artist.

The St. Regis International Cup 2011
5/21/2011 - Cowdray Park Polo Club
Over three and a half thousand spectators watched exhilarating polo at this year’s annual St. Regis International Cup – the first test match of the season – where the Audi England team gave a valiant display of team work against the Jaeger Le-Coultre South American side, featuring Nacho Figueras and 9 goaler Eduardo Novillo Astrada. The match, played on May 21st at Cowdray Park Polo Club in Midhurst, West Sussex was a dream come true for six goaler and St. Regis Connoisseur, Nacho Figueras who played brilliantly in his first 28 goal test match against England. Commenting on the match Nacho said, “It is always a pleasure for me to play high goal polo in England, and The St. Regis International Cup was the highest goal match played anywhere in the world in May. The England team is tough to beat. They play together around the world and so their teamwork and strategy is unmistakable. It was a fast, flowing and exciting match to play and to watch – the crowd loved it!”
The England team, Captained by James Beim, played fast and open – taking the ball from one end of the pitch to the other in a couple of good runs. Commenting on the game afterwards James said “Playing against Eduardo and Nacho was always going to be a challenge, but the team, despite losing Luke Tomlinson to injury the day before worked really well together and gave the South Americans a runs for their money!”
England started with a ½ goal handicap but it was the South Americans who immediately took control of the game with Facundo Sola opening the scoring and his team mate Jose Donoso following suit soon after. Within minutes they were up two goals to England’s half. However, a foul from the South Americans led to a penalty for the home side, which Malcolm Borwick, who was filling in for the injured Luke Tomlinson, converted with ease just before the bell rang to signify the end of the first chukka. With just a ½ goal difference in the score, England were very much still in the game.
Great team play between Mark Tomlinson and James Beim added another goal to the scoreboard for the English side but a penalty converted by Sola took the South American side ½ a goal ahead once again. However, once again, the South American youngster, Facundo Sola came back into the picture, adding two more goals to the board for the South Americans, giving them a half-time lead of 5 – 4 ½.
The last two chukkas, it has to be said, belonged predominantly to the South Americans. Figueras and Jose continued where Sola had left off, finding the posts once again for his side. All eyes were then on Mark Tomlinson and his pony Hestenel, who was later announced as the Best Playing Pony, as they raced up the field, speeding past every opposing player to score. However, another penalty by Sola increased the South Americans lead, although moments later Malcolm Borwick closed the gap, converting for the England side. With just ½ a goal in it, the last chukka was all to play for – neither team could be sure who would hold the trophy.
Seven minutes before the end, both teams were desperately trying to get the ball down towards their respective goals. England produced shot after shot at goal but every time the South Americans were faultless in their defence and the home team could not add to the scoreboard; only Sola found the posts once again, cementing South America’s win seconds before the final whistle.
Following the game, Nacho said, “The game was a lot of fun. It was the first time we had played together as a team but we connected right away. On a personal note, I am normally more comfortable playing at position 2 but it was fun to be striker for a change! It is great for me to play 28-goal polo, especially on the wonderful grounds at Cowdray Park.”

The first ever St. Regis International Test Match, one of the most prestigious high goal polo matches in the world, took place Sunday, August 31, 2008, with England vs. Italy surrounded by the historic ruins of Cowdray Castle in the beautiful rural West Sussex English countryside. As the third and final match in the International Test Match Series, in the English polo season, the St. Regis International Cup at Cowdray signaled the kick-off of the St. Regis brand’s three-year commitment to the spectacular sport of international polo.

Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic 2008
5/31/2008 - Governors Island, New York
Almost 70 years since polo was last played on Governors Island, the enchanting “Sport of Kings” returned to New York City in grand style. It was a free treat for those in the NYC metro area, who arrived by ferry to watch the exciting match between Black Watch, captained by Nacho Figueras and Skeeterville sponsored by Asprey, captained by Will Johnston.
The riveting match not only kicked off the Northeast polo season, it also re-established polo’s historic connection with Governors Island and New York. Polo was played regularly on Governors Island when it was an Army base. The last match was played just before World War II in September 1941.
Governors Island opening day celebrations were free to the public and included the polo match, ferry ride, biking, picnicking and tours of the National Historic District. Additionally, a Family Festival featuring children’s activities such as musical and dance performances, historic ship tours, bike parades, and arts and crafts ensured a good time was had by all.
Just as St. Regis was thrilled to be part of the New York debut of this spirited sport at the beginning of the 20th century, the brand was pleased to participate in polo’s historic and thrilling return to New York City.

Four St. Regis Residential projects (Bal Harbour, Costa Rica, Deer Crest and Bahia Beach, Puerto Rico) collaborated to present week three of the Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge hosted by supermodel and actress Brooke Shields. The day long celebration featured a series of moments created by St. Regis to bring a taste of the St. Regis experience to Brideghampton.
The legendary St. Regis Butler Service was on hand to serve the St. Regis Bloody Mary, the brand’s signature drink, as well as other cocktails throughout the match. As a tribute to the unique St. Regis style, several design elements were incorporated into the venue, evoking the brand’s signature refined luxury. The bar in the main tent featured a replica of the famed Maxfield Parrish Old King Cole Mural, the original of which was recently restored and is valued at $12 million. Carousel horses, with floral arrangements designed by Preston Bailey, included flowers indigenous to each of the four St. Regis Residence locations.
